Weight savings with modern steel materials and forging technologies in the powertrain and chassis

In two studies carried out at the automotive research company fka Forschungsgesellschaft Kraftfahrwesen mbH Aachen, The Lightweight Forging Initiative analysed two vehicle types – a passenger car and a light commercial vehicle – with respect to their lightweight design potential in the powertrain and chassis. The result: Modern steel materials and forging technology can make a decisive contribution to the lightweight design requirements of the vehicle industry. During the first phase, engineers determined a lightweight design potential of 42 kilograms in the powertrain and chassis components of a medium-sized passenger car. In 2015, the second phase commenced. This is currently investigating the lightweight design potential of a light commercial vehicle with a total weight of up to 3.5 tons. In future, high-strength steel will replace conventional steels in many areas and its market share in the automotive industry will increase significantly in the mid-term. The use of improved steels as well as shorter process chains will also be accompanied scientifically by five funded R&D projects to the value of more than 4 million euros.
